Repeat challenge testing of a slow release cadexomer iodine dressing against VRE (vancomycin resistant Enterococcus)

As wound dressings are introduced it becomes important to determine their antimicrobial activity (in vitro) in order to gain insight into their performance in the clinic. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the antibacterial activity and durability of a cadexomer iodine antimicrobial dressing against VRE using a repeat challenge log reduction ÒkillÓ test over 3 days. In this study 1.5 x 1.5 cm pieces of Iodosorb dressing were added to 1ml of heat inactivated horse serum and mixed. 1ml serum controls were also set up. After 1, 2 and three days of incubation at 32oC, the test dressings and controls were re-challenged with a fresh inoculum of 106 organisms and again tested at 0, 30 minutes and 24 hours, to determine the number of surviving organisms by the pour plate technique. All tests and controls were carried out in triplicate. The cadexomer iodine antimicrobial dressing reduced the bacterial count to below detection limit within 30 minutes at initial and each subsequent re-challenge time point over the 3 day test period. This study data indicates that the cadexomer iodine antimicrobial dressing has a very high level of activity against VRE.
