Nursing home america and F-Tag 314: success in wound care Deborah Dee, RN, Heritage Healthcare Center, Utica, NY The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are responsible for the quality standards in health care facilities through its survey and certification activity, and Federal Tags or ÒF-TagsÓ are the measurements used to assess the quality of care provided in these facilities. The current guidelines to surveyors have been entirely replaced by a new revision of F-314 The CMS surveys are in place to ensure that the facility is providing the optimum care and services to promote the prevention of all types of wounds, promote the healing of all types of wounds (including infection) and prevent additional wounds from occurring. The surveyors are not just looking at the incidence of pressure ulcers any more but will look at risk factors in the wound healing/prevention process. Standard of practice translates to Òbest practiceÓ. F- 314 483.25 (c) is specific to pressure ulcer prevention and treatment and states: Based on the comprehensive assessment of a resident, the facility must ensure that; .1. A resident who enters the facility without pressure sores does not develop pressure sores unless the individualÕs clinical condition demonstrates that they were unavoidable; and.2. A resident having pressure ulcers receives necessary treatment and services to promote healing, prevent infection and prevent new sores from developing The full poster presentation will highlight the steps that have been taken in our facility to ensure that the incidence of these ÒavoidableÓ pressure ulcers has been reduced dramatically. We will discuss the protocols that have been put in place since the new revision of F-314 and how a successful working partnership with a commercial company* has helped us to implement this. Product Choices**, platforms, programs and people providing educational offerings*** have all contributed to our success story. *Smith & Nephew Wound Management Inc, Largo, FL.**Secura Range, Smith & Nephew Wound Management Inc, Largo, FL.***PST and OPTIONS modules, Smith & Nephew Wound Management Inc., Largo, FL |
