Use of amorphous gel dressings* in patients with firearm wounds: the experience of the Central Hospital of the military police in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Col. Humberto M. Tindo, MD, Cap. Rosemeire Ninck de Souza, RN, ET, Central Military Police Hospital, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

Firearm injuries are unfortunately very common in patients admitted to our Hospital. Rifle bullet with high velocity rounds are the most frequent and these wounds cause muscle disruption, infection and necrosis. They are very difficult to care for. The use of a new technology of an amorphous gel with bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties was evaluated in 19 patients, whose wounds were not healing.. .Dressings in the form of an amorphous gel with high glycerin content and a modified collagen base were used supplied in the form of tubes. The patients had ambulatory attention for their wounds by specialized nurses and ample photographic documentation was made.. .The dressings were changed daily until complete healing of the wounds. They were easy to apply, and due to their capacity to the fill the area completely, they acted directly on all surfaces of the wound bed, stimulating vascularization and controlling bioburden Removal of dressings was very easy and painless as well.. .The effectiveness of this technology was proven throughout the whole healing process and accelerated wound closure in a short space of time.. .These wounds were caused during police activities but are similar to those encountered in battlefield situations and can benefit wound treatment in this area as well
