Pressure ulcer healing with a concentrated, fortified, collagen protein hydrolysate supplement: a randomized, controlled trial S. Kwon Lee, MD, FACS, Mary Ellen Posthauer, RD, CD, LD, Becky Dorner, RD, LD, Mary Jane Maloney, RN, MSN, CNP, CWS, Vicki Redovian, MA, RD, LD Objective: To compare PUSH (pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing,National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel) scores of pressure ulcer healing over 8 weeks in residents given standard care plus a concentrated fortified collagen protein hydrolysate versus standard care plus placebo..Materials and Methods: We enrolled a total of 90 residents with 132 stage II,III, or IV pressure ulcers in a double blind, randomized, multi-center trial. The study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of a concentrated, fortified, collagen protein hydrolysate* in the treatment of pressure ulcers..Results: After 8 weeks of treatment, residents who reveived standard care plus the study products had significantly better ( 3.55-+ 4.66, P<0.55) PUSH scores compared with those who received standard care plus placebo..Conclusion: Pressure ulcer healing shown by PUSH score was significantly better in residents who received standard care plus the study product compared with those who received standard care plus placebo for 8 weeks *(Pro-Stat) Medical Nutrition USA, Inc.,Englewood, NJ Cuddigan J, Berlowitz DR, Ayello EA.
