Identifying atypical ulcers in an acute care environment Jennifer A. Gardner, PT, DPT, CWS, Marcy A. Turkos, MPT As health care professionals encountering wounds on a regular basis, four common diagnoses are considered when attempting to categorize wounds. These are diabetic, pressure, arterial and venous ulcers. However, wound care practitioners also commonly encounter wounds that do not neatly fall into one of these categories. These wounds have been typically referred to as "atypical ulcers." This presentation seeks to identify and define these wounds as well as offer treatment options. Such diagnoses as bullous pemphygus, psoriasis, sickle cell anemia, calciphylaxis, and malignant melanoma will be discussed. Pictures of these wounds encountered in situ will also be presented. The goal of this presentation is to give the audience a better understanding of these wounds and to be able to differentially diagnose a wound when it does not present in a "typical" fashion. |
