Community-acquired MRSA: implications for the advanced practice nurse

Kristell Michael, BSN, RN, ET, CWS, CHRN, United Regional HCS, Wichita Falls, TX

Research has shown the emergence of methicillin- (oxacillin) resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) in the community. This organism is frequently manifested in skin and soft tissue infections like cellulitis, cutaneous abscesses, and furuncles that can easily be diagnosed by practitioners as Òprobable spider biteÓ. Awareness by Advanced Practice Nurses regarding CA-MRSA with appropriate education to affected patients, families and the community, especially targeting populations who have been identified as higher risk, can facilitate an earlier, accurate diagnosis and more judicious, appropriate, and therefore cost-effective, pharmacologic treatment. Preventative measures, as well as education to foster an environment that discourages the promotion of antibiotic resistance, are an essential components required to control the increasing reservoir of CA-MRSA in the community. .
