The future is ÒEÓÑon-demand access to wound E-education

Mary Regan, PhD, RN, CWS, Smith & Nephew Wound Management Inc., Largo, FL

E-learning has been defined as Òthe combination of learning services and technology to provide high value integrated learning, anytime, anyplaceÓ (e-Learning Ltd, 2000). While e-learning's roots are based in traditional instructor-led training (ILT) and computer based training (CBT), the eye of e-learning is on the future -- evolving to create second wave training options that didn't even exist a few years ago, (www.knowledgenet.com)

The vast movement towards e-learning is clearly motivated by the many benefits it offers

-On-demand availability enables students to complete training conveniently at off-hours or from home. .-Self-pacing for slow or quick learners reduces stress and increases satisfaction. .-Interactivity engages users, pushing them rather than pulling them through training. .-Confidence that refresher or quick reference materials are available reduces burden of responsibility of mastery

The most important advantages to the learner are increased retention of information and reduced learning time.

Global Wound Academy (GWA) provides worldwide access to education and information about therapeutic areas of wound management. It offers a series of modular courses on wound care, at different levels, so the learner can extend their knowledge of wound care..This is a new and unique web based wound education program as well as a learning management system based on the need to provide education to large numbers of staff, in a flexible environment while reducing costs of education.

The Global Wound Academy is based on the concept of Continuous Professional Development (CPD). CPD is recognized as a central role for Lifelong Learning in personal and professional development. The Global Wound Academy combines the key elements: CPD, Reflective Learning, Development and Support to help achieve Continuing Professional Development goals.
