The use of polymeric membrane dressings in a traumatic chin wound injury Roger Sessions, DO, FACEP, Laura Barnes, RN, MSN, WOCN, CWCN, APN-CNS Clinical Problem: A qualified Boston Marathon athlete was running during a Chicago Marathon race amd fell on asphalt. As a result of the fall he split his chin open and exposed bone was visible in the wound bed. .Current Clinical Approach: A polymeric membrane dressing was applied on the chin wound the day the injury occurred. The dressing was removed 24 hours after the injury and particles of asphalt appeared on the dressing. The dressings powerful wicking properties drew and captured the wound debris in the dressing. Advanced wound healing was noted. There was an absence of usual swelling and bruising. In 48 hours following the injury the edges of the wound are well approximated. .Patient Outcome: The chin wound completely healed within 14 days. Polymeric membrane dressings are an excellent dressing type to use from initiation until wound closure. .Conclusion: The polymeric membrane dressing enabled the chin wound to heal without the use of stitches or steri strips. The natural wicking properties of the dressing approximated the wound margins to wound closure..Behavioral Objectives:.1) Discuss problematic issues related to trauma wounds..2) Identify polymeric membrane dressings natural wicking properties to remove foreign debris from the wound bed. .3) Discuss polymeric membrane dressing used to provide an optimal healing environment.
