Guidelines for the use of medical writers in wound care publications First Author: James Lutz Authors: James B. Lutz, MS, CCRA, Lutz Consulting LLC The practice of using medical writers to draft biomedical publications has grown in recent years. While the use of medical writers can improve the overall quality of publications and greatly speed the publication process, concerns have been raised about the inappropriate influence of sponsoring companies. To address this issue, the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) has developed a position statement on the contributions of medical writers to scientific publications, and a code of ethics to which AMWA members should adhere. Separately, other organizations have attempted to address this same issue through their own publications, including: Good Publication Practice for Pharmaceutical Companies (GPP), Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: Writing and Editing for Biomedical Publications, and the European Medical Writers Association (EMWA) guidelines on the role of medical writers in developing peer-reviewed publications. The objective of the current presentation is to summarize each of these important documents with a particular emphasis on how they apply to biomedical publications within the wound care industry. |
