Management of periwound skin in venous leg ulcers

Linda M. Miller, BSN, RN, Bamboo, a business of Smith & Nephew, Clearwater, Fla; Sarah Brown, Smith & Nephew Group Research Center, Hull, United Kingdom

Problem: Periwound skin problems have well documented implications for the quality of life of patients and the time to closure of venous leg ulcers. While numerous clinical studies have provided information on the impact of wound healing products on aspects such as erythema and maceration, these have by design been based on tightly homogenous patient groups.

Solution: The WoundPath™ Outcomes Management System provides facilities and clinicians with the ability to document all aspects of patient care and to contribute de-identified records to a national data repository hosted by the system’s provider, Bamboo*. This enables clinicians to examine and evaluate their own performance and to benchmark their clinical practice and treatment selections, including wound dressings, against a representative peer group.

Findings: Based on 843 wounds, profiles of exudate, edema, erythema, maceration, and other periwound conditions have been studied in a range of hydrocellular and hydrocolloid products.

Learning: This method provides a valuable means of establishing product performance in a “real world” patient population to supplement the technical and clinical information provided by the manufacturers.
