Abstract: Advanced practitioners in wound healing are increasingly required to demonstrate a high level of expertise in evaluating evidence related to the mechanisms of wound healing and appropriate treatment regimes. As part of a portfolio of educational courses, an interprofessional, distance learning course at post-graduate level has been offered by the Wound Healing Research Unit since 1996. The course now leads to a post-graduate certificate (1 year), a post-graduate diploma (2 years), or an MSc in Wound Healing and Tissue Repair.

Since 2001, there has been an increased use of the Internet and web-based technologies, allowing students to engage in online tutorials, submit assignments, monitor progress, receive feedback, and experience peer support through tutorial groups. The use of such technologies allows the course to be delivered to overseas students, where distance may previously have been a problem.

Evaluation of the program has shown that students feel more confident as a result of doing the course. This is demonstrated by the number of students who successfully submit their assignments and/or research projects for publication. The interaction between students from various professional backgrounds provides the potential to offer multiple perspectives on clinical issues and a vibrant environment in which to learn.
